Enjoy the following reviews for Teen and Young Adult fiction/nonfiction reading. You will also find books I put in this category based on my own reading recommendations.
Love and Gelato
Recommended Ages: 12-14. However, this novel is not the squeaky clean and wholesome romance that it boasts to be. It does have concerning and cautionary content for religious families. I would pass on the novel, but if I had to give it an age recommendation, I would say 16+.
I Must Betray You
While recommended ages 12-17, from the outset, I would like to simply establish that due to the possible disturbing content of the text I would recommend this novel 16+.
Cautionary Notes: some profanity, violence, mention of suicide, teen romance - kissing, but one inappropriate reference.
Better than the Movies
Recommended ages 12-18. HOWEVER, should be recommended 18+
Cautionary content: profanity and inappropriate references
The Bletchley Riddle
Recommended Ages: 10+ (I would recommend 13+)
If your reader loves WWII, mystery, and dual voice narration, then you may want to consider adding this title to their reading list.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Recommended Ages: 12+
I do NOT recommend this book. Aside from the cautionary material, it is not worth the read.
The Fire, The Water, and Maudie McGinn
Recommended Ages: 10+ (I would recommend 13+)
Maudie is thirteen years old and is autistic. At the opening of the novel, she has just finished seventh grade and lives in Texas with her mother and step-dad. During the summer, she travels to California to stay with her father for the summer – all part of the divorce agreement.
Impossible Escape
Recommended Ages: 12-18
Impossible Escape follows two Jewish teenagers Rudi and Gerta through their real-life experience living in Nazi-occupied Europe. Rudi and Gerta were originally school mates who reconnect despite circumstances and distance. Through various mis encounters, Rudi ends up in Auschwitz where he miraculously survives almost two years.
Tornado Brain
Recommended Ages: 10-13 (I recommend ages 13+)
The main character is neurodivergent, and the story is from her perspective.
Cautionary Note: This novel involves the death of a teenage girl.
The Canyon’s Edge
Caution: Mental Health
The story is recommended for ages 8 to 12, but I would personally start at 12 and go up because of the nature of the mental health crisis that Nora finds herself in. While the story is a bit dark, it is filled with hope and the author has a clear message of hope in these dark situations.
Code of Honor
Recommended Ages: 10-17 (I recommend staying on the HS end)
Have you ever doubted everything you ever knew about someone? What if it was your brother?
Blood and Germs
Recommended Ages: 10-17
A nonfiction exploration of the Civil War from the medical perspective.
